Qigong is the equivalent of yoga from China, and involves flowing gentle movements that are very similar to Tai Chi. It is a great mindful exercise to practice and can be implemented by people of a variety of fitness levels.

Qigong Instructor Andy Wright was born with cerebral palsy, a disorder often caused by a brain injury to a developing child or before birth. It affects movement and motor skills.

Up until Andy Wright was 8 years old, he relied on a wheelchair to get around. However, he saw other kids playing and running around, and wanted to join them. He first set a goal to walk just a few feet to get a present from the school Santa Claus at Christmas time. Then, he studied Karate, which improved his muscle coordination and balance.

Eventually he received his black belt and learned Tai Chi and Qigong. He has since become famous worldwide for his kind and down-to-earth Qigong teaching and his inspirational story.

Qigong for Anxiety and Depression is just one of Wright’s qigong courses on Udemy, a few of which free.

This particular course teaches Qigong techniques to help relieve anxiety and depression. You do not need prior experience in Qigong to take this course.

Pros

Cons

  • Basic introduction to the concepts and benefits and then some good instruction later
  • Some reviews say that the background sound is distracting

YOU CAN KNIT! Combination and Traditional (Western) Knitting

YOU CAN KNIT! free udemy courses

screenshot from Udemy Official Site

Annie Modesitt is a delightful knitting teacher who has a warm, fun personality and a terrific sense of humor. Some years ago, she posted a few courses up on Udemy, but, perhaps seeing that she was lost in all of the noise on Udemy, did not do much to promote them there.

For this reason, if you search for Annie Modesitt on Udemy, you won’t find her or her courses at all. They are hidden from public searches.

However, we happen to have the direct link to Annie Modesitt’s free course on Udemy, YOU CAN KNIT! Combination and Traditional (Western) Knitting. This is a great little course that teaches the basics of knitting, including the knit stitch and the purl stitch.

Modesitt is also a champion of “combination knitting,” which is a special knitting style that can be much faster than the typical knitting that most people are taught in the West. You will learn both Western (traditional) knitting and combination knitting in this class.

You will also learn how to “bind off” in this online knitting course and the basics of steam blocking (to properly shape your knitted creations).

This course comes with the following warning from Udemy:

“Warning: This course has not yet been approved by Udemy's Quality Review team and does not currently offer a Certificate of Completion.”

What they really mean is that this course is old and was completed before they updated their quality guidelines. You can ignore this warning. Most of Udemy’s “quality” guidelines are really about making the video slicker and more “professional,” which in some ways reduces the homegrown charm of classes made by every day people.

Pros

Cons

  • Learn to knit, purl, cast on and bind off
  • Pace needs to slow down

Professional Vocal Warm Up

If you love to sing, then you will enjoy the  Professional Vocal Warm Up  free course on Udemy. This is another one of those hidden gem courses that Udemy has a “warning” on.

However, with a 4.9 average star rating for 473 ratings, and almost 40,000 students enrolled, you would think Udemy would get the hint that the class is actually of decent quality.

This course promises to help you properly warm up your voice so you can expand your vocal range, improve the tone of your voice, strengthen the vocal chords, and sound absolutely “amazing.”

The course was developed by Eric Arceneaux, recording artist and voice coach. His Arceneux Approach (AAproach) helps singers develop a beautiful voice in healthy ways to promote positive musical expression.

His course includes and introduction, four professional warm ups, and two bonus diaphragm videos.

Pros

Cons

  • Open up the voice and expand your vocal range
  • Some reviews say that it needs a schedule to follow because it is kind of confusing when you've already watched it 3x and you know what to do

The US Constitution: A Biography

Here is another course given the Udemy “warning” that has extremely positive ratings. With around 8,000 students, this history course has a 4.4 average star rating with 59 total ratings.

The US Constitution: A Biography  was developed by Robert J. Allison, a Professor and Chair of the History Department at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts. He is an award-winning professor who also teaches at the Harvard Extension School.

One of the course reviewers gave it 5 stars, saying:

“One way to understand the Constitution is to look at the theory behind its architecture. Another way is to look at the details of various episodes as the constitutional architecture is works out. Professor Allison, brings to life many key developments that have made our society the way it is. Conflict and dispute have been with us since the beginning, and that helps put today's issues into a broader context.”

This is a much longer course than many Udemy free courses (and paid ones even!). It offers 8.5 hours of on-demand video and 33 supplemental resources.

Pros

Cons

  • It's very detail, which I have thoroughly enjoyed but now is getting tedious due to the monotonous tone of the instructor
  •    Instructor needs more energy
